God , the Creator of the universe is one and the same for the whole creation, yet He is remembered by different names, by the followers of different religions, faiths, sects etc. In Hindu religion alone, there are hundreds of different names of God. However one name, that stands apart and above all other names is OM ( According to Vedic philosophy this is the original name and as such the highest name of God. The word (3rd) is constituted of three letters. , 6-> and i=r (in English, A,u,m or A.O.M). Each of these letters represents several other names of God and these depict various attributes of God. As God has numerous attributes, there are hundreds of other names which indicate these attributes. These names, which are based on various attributes are the names of the same God who is only ONE. However many people, because of their ignorance believe that there are many gods and godesses who are known by different names. This belief is wrong as there is only One God who pervades everywhere. In this small book, an attempt has been made to describe briefly, various aspects of OM. These inter-alia include its meanings, the origin, its common usage and description in various holy scriptures and its linkage with other faiths etc. Some methods of meditation and OM JAPA are also stated. In part II of this book, famous OM mantras, with their meaning, have also been mentioned. Several OM songs (9-1-9-) have also been included for the benefit of the general reader. It is hoped that the readers will appreciate the sincere efforts made in the compilation of this small volume which should attract the attention of all God-loving people. Any suggestions to improve the contents of this book are welcome.
